About
“Kakolika”
is the Hawaiian word for Catholic.
Welcome to Kakolika! We are a Catholic family-based group with a focus on building up God’s kingdom here on earth through hula worship (sacred gesture) and music.
It is our intention to live out our Catholic faith in every aspect of our lives. We also intend to create products that promote life-giving virtues and morals such as pro-life, purity, chastity, peace and unity. We plan to have one of a kind handmade rosaries, shirts and other religious items available for sale in the near future.
At this website we have a great opportunity to share with you our beautiful Catholic faith and what we have found to help us draw closer to our Lord Jesus Christ. We would also like to share with you some of our life experiences as a Catholic family along the way.
HISTORY
Let me start off by introducing myself. My name is Roselynn and my husband is Michael. Our daughter’s name is Leilani (Lani) and is now 8 years old and our son Joseph ( JJ ) is now 1. As you can probably tell, we really enjoy the Hawaiian culture and are proud to be faithful Catholics (not chameleon or cafeteria Catholics). Since we have a passion for both the culture and our faith, along with our attempt to find creative ways to share the treasure we have found in Jesus and the Catholic faith with our kids and others, we thought of an idea to combine them together. Which for us as a family, has helped us integrate our faith into our everyday lives and keep it alive and fruitful.
I, myself have three siblings (Marianne, Albert, and Emeline). My mother is Linda and my father’s name is Leo (who is now with our Heavenly Father in Heaven). Growing up my parents both worked full-time so we always looked forward to spending quality time together as a family during our summer vacations. They invested in timeshares in Maui, Kaui, Escondido and Utah. One of our favorite places we would visit was Hawaii because of the people, waterfalls, luaus, rainbows, beaches, sunsets, flowers and so much more. We would spend hours at the beach boogy boarding, building sand castles and just spend time talking and laughing with each other as we watched the waves crash and the beautiful sky change colors (as well as our super dark tans
) as the sun set. Also, something I know we could never forget was the road to Hana and the seven sacred pools. We created so many great memories there as a family and ever since then, we had formed a love for the Hawaiian Islands.
In 2004, we had the chance to witness my sister Emeline and my brother-in-law Robby’s wedding in Maui. Leilani was the flower girl and 2 years old at that time. The wedding was absolutely beautiful and I could see God’s beauty all around us. They were so blessed to have Father Kevin (the former pastor of St. Pius V) officiate and about 70 of their closest friends and family share in their joy as well. Albert also was able to teach me how to surf for the first time, which was really fun and we also visited Molokai where we took a bus tour of the island and saw the place where Blessed Father Damien ministered to the people there. Also in Maui we were able to attend mass that had hula worship (or as called in Hawaii- sacred gesture). Seeing them dance hula to praise and worship songs we knew was so awesome to witness.
I started dancing hula in high school and Leilani was a toddler when she started. One of the main reasons why we wanted to start a hula worship group was because I was looking for a halau for us to join but for some reason or another we haven’t been able to find one. They were either too expensive, too far, or some of the groups had young girls and women dancing immodestly. And surprisingly, Michael developed an interest in Hawaiian music and began learning songs on the ukulele that he had bought for me last Christmas.
Since it has not been easy to find hula ministries in our area, I started searching the internet and became so inspired when I found many different groups dancing to songs that are familiar to our family. I was able to choose different hand movements to use, in addition to other movements that God has helped me create. It was then that it seemed that God’s awesome hand really started to guide us. It was mainly through YouTube and GodTube that I have found resources to develop dances and ideas that give me motivation and determination.
Shortly after we were blessed with the opportunity to do a dance as an opening prayer at Theology on Tap. Michael, Robby, Albert, Brian and Archie (who are the godfathers to our kids), have put together a great sound with live music including drums, ukulele and guitar. We are also very blessed to have Emeline and our long time friend, Fred, sing for us.
We are just starting, and we will go wherever God may lead us to, since he has opened a door for our ministry. I am completely content knowing that as parents, Michael and I are trying our best to raise our children to learn to take the goodness in this world and protect their innocence, purity and the dignity of females, as well as males and uplift true beauty that God has created.
It is our prayer that we will be used as God’s instruments to spread His joy into the hearts of many. We hope you enjoy our website.
